SINGAPORE, 4 August 2018 – Eurokars Group has introduced the highly-anticipated New Mazda 6 Sedan which redefines the executive car of choice in Mazda’s showrooms for all driving enthusiasts and discerning car buyers.

The Mazda 6 is renowned for being one of the sportiest executive saloons in its class. This latest model with a lower center of gravity and wider stance is now complemented by a set of newly designed straight spokes rims in either 17 or 19 inches in diameter. The new front grille and headlamps accentuate the car‘s sleek and sculptural form which creates a bolder expression and projects a prominent presence while cruising down the streets.

Soul Red Crystal replaces Soul Red in the body colour lineup. The fresh and lustrous transparency of this new red emphasises the beautiful contours of Mazda’s signature KODO design.

The interior of the new Mazda 6 has undergone significant enhancements. The new instrument panel has been redesigned, thus imparting a sleeker and simplified look. In keeping with the concept behind the development of this third update of the well-acclaimed flagship model – “Mature Elegance” – the interior of the new Mazda 6 is specially designed to stimulate the senses with a unique combination of Mazda’s finest materials including real wood trim and suede. Newly available is Mazda’s highest-quality interior package for the 2.5 litre Luxury variant which includes Nappa leather seats, real Japanese Sen wood trim and suede-finish materials.

Fueled by innovations, this made in Japan Mazda 6 offers new exciting features such as the 360 degree camera to navigate through tight turns, ventilated front seats to draw and expel heat, and a cylinder deactivation system which improves fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent during city driving, making Mazda the only Japanese brand in the local market to offer such fuel-saving technology so far.

The concept behind the development of the New Mazda 6 is “Mature Elegance.” Both the exterior and interior are elevated to a look of yet higher level of quality, and the overall presentation is that of a more mature, refined design.

The exterior design further accentuates the essential elegance of the Mazda 6. Features such as the new front grille contribute to creating an image of powerful motion that flows from front to rear, the settled nature of a low center of gravity, and further refined look of dignified beauty.

EXTERIOR

Changes to the design of the front face for both the new Mazda 6 sedan and wagon models center on the grille area and emphasise a look of horizontal movement that accentuates the car’s breadth and maturity. Meticulous attention to every detail helps create a more premium feel.

The grille opening is changed from the previous fin design to a mesh pattern of small blocks. Its intricate design based on calculations of how light is reflected causes light striking each block from any angle to bounce off in attractively bright fashion. This combines with the greater depth of the sculpted pattern to strengthen the three-dimensional presentation of the face.

The headlamps adopt a sleek, wide shape and the new LED turn signals form a line along the upper edge of each headlamp unit. The sharp form and lines of light produce a bold expression. This enhances the look of the design when lit, strengthening the expression of eyes with a gaze fixed forward while lighting the lower section of the headlamp housing to hint at the low center of gravity.

The newly designed 17-inch and 19-inch wheels, both feature straight spokes which convey an image of large diameter through their motion, while the shape around the lug nuts presents a sculpted look.

On the sedan, a new design for the rear-facing lower section of the trunk lid and the horizontal line of its extended garnish lend a refined air befitting a sedan. The rear combination lamps now feature a sleek, sharp, well-balanced appearance. In addition, the exhaust pipes are now positioned closer to the outer edges and the pipe diameter is also increased. This combines with diagonal cuts that follow the line of the bumper shape and a reduced gap between the pipes and the bumper to accentuate the look of a wide stance and low center of gravity.

INTERIOR

Further refinement of the instrument panel and door trim designs highlights the breadth of the cabin, conveys a sense of speed, and underscores the enhanced quality of the new Mazda 6.

Matching the height of the center and side ventilation louvers further heightens the lateral flow of the instrument panel’s design, enhancing the refined cleanliness of the cabin environment. The side louvers are designed to extend into the door trim, making the instrument panel appear wider and heightening the feeling of spaciousness. A hair-line finished aluminum film layered over a sculpted acrylic base material is used on the instrument panel and door trim. These new decorative parts add a rich touch of material depth and express a higher level of quality.

The Standard, Executive, Premium variants carry over the previous symmetrical design for the three-meter cluster, and the 2.5 litre Luxury variant adopts a seven-inch TFT LCD display in the center meter cluster. This allows a rich variety of expressions only possible with a digital display which makes reading the information clearer and easier.

An eight-inch center display positioned on top of the dashboard is the first of its size to be used on the new Mazda 6 across all variants. It establishes a balance with the wide feeling of the cabin while enhancing operating ease and visibility.

A dramatic shift in the design approach for the seats can be seen in the current model as compared to the tight-fitting shape of the previous ones. Examples of the efforts made to accentuate the rich depth and sculpted shape of the new seats include the introduction of thicker padding and wider seat cushions which create a comfortable and inviting look that befits a flagship model.

Available for the 2.5 litre Luxury variant is the brand’s highest quality interior package that employs Mazda’s finest materials and is delivered with unique color coordination. Features include Nappa leather seats, real wood trim and suede-finish materials. The highest quality interior package is available in either Pure White or the new Oriental Brown color.

ENGINE / PERFORMANCE

SKYACTIV-G 2.0/2.5
This 2.0-liter engine features a balance between the spirited drive of its powerful low to mid-range torque and excellent fuel efficiency. For this round’s update, the engine’s intake ports have been redesigned and a new piston shape adopted. The nozzle of the multi-hole injectors has been redesigned and fuel spray pressure increased. A coolant control valve makes warming the engine more efficient, and asymmetrical oil rings in conjunction with barrel-shaped piston skirts reduce mechanical friction. These changes increase low-end torque by 6.2 percent, while also reducing real-world fuel consumption and particulate matter formation during combustion. The result is enhanced dynamic performance, fuel economy, and environmental friendliness. The changes have also made it possible to use a unified compression ratio of 13.0:1 for the engines shipped to all markets.

With a high 13.0:1 compression ratio, the reduced weight of an aluminum-alloy cylinder block, and a balancer unit that reduces low frequency rattling, the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 engine achieves high levels of dynamic performance, fuel economy and quietness. The new version of the engine adopts the same technology updates as the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 above. In addition, a new cylinder deactivation system is available, further reducing fuel consumption when driving at constant speeds between 40–80km/h.

Cylinder Deactivation [SKYACTIV-G 2.5 only]:
The system shuts down two of the engine’s four cylinders in light-load situations, such as when cruising at a constant speed. Running on two cylinders reduces pumping loss and mechanical resistance. Deactivation is achieved via a switching mechanism in the hydraulic lash adjusters of the first and fourth cylinders. When running on all four cylinders, these serve as the fulcrum (pivot point) for each rocker arm, and the arms operate the intake and exhaust valves. Releasing a lock pin in the lash adjusters switches the fulcrum to the valve side, stopping the movement of the valves to deactivate the outer two cylinders. Airflow intake volume, fuel injection volumes and ignition timing are precisely controlled to allow the engine to switch smoothly between two-cylinder and four-cylinder operation. Cylinder deactivation is more effective at low speeds, improving fuel economy by approximately 20 percent when driving at a constant 40km/h, and by approximately 5 percent at a constant 80km/h.

Precision intake ports and new piston shape
The shape of the intake ports has been carefully crafted to generate a stronger tumble flow during intake. Reducing the height of the piston crowns while optimising their shape also strengthens tumble flow during the compression stroke and increases turbulence at the time of ignition. These factors cause the flame to spread faster from the spark plug and combustion is completed more quickly without knocking (irregular combustion). The result is greater torque at low to mid-range rpms and improved fuel economy at higher rpms.

More efficient fuel injection
The nozzles of the multi-hole fuel injectors were redesigned and fuel pressure increased from 20MPa to 30MPa to realise a faster and more broadly dispersed spray. Fuel is thoroughly vaporised before it adheres to the walls of the cylinder, realising efficient, waste-free combustion. Three-stage split fuel injection is used when the engine is cold and combustion is more likely to produce particulate matter. This improves vaporisation and atomisation of the fuel and reduces particulate matter formation by approximately 80 percent. The result is excellent environmental performance that conforms to European particulate number regulations that came into effect in 2017.

Coolant control system
Adopts a new Coolant Control Valve that helps to prevent heat from escaping while the engine warms up by reducing the flow of coolant around the walls of the combustion chamber to a trickle. Larger amounts of fuel must be injected when the engine is first started because gasoline less readily vaporises in cold temperatures. Adopting the new coolant control system helps the engine to warm up quickly and cuts the necessary fuel increase in half over the previous SKYACTIV-G 2.5 engine, contributing to improved real-world fuel economy.

Optimised oil ring and piston skirt shapes
The new Mazda 6 now adopts asymmetrical oil rings, with a larger outer radius at the top and smaller radius at the bottom edge. Optimising the thickness of the oil film on the wall of the cylinder as the piston rises and falls reduces mechanical resistance. Revised piston skirt curvature realises an ideal barrel shape. The new skirts combine with the asymmetrical oil rings to significantly reduce mechanical resistance, contributing to better fuel economy.

FEATURES HIGHLIGHT

360° View Monitor*
Using four cameras on the front, sides and rear of the vehicle, this system shows the area around the car on a central display. Eight parking sensors at the front and rear detect proximity to obstacles, and an alarm sounds. The system also assists with the perception of blind spots and contributes to the prompt avoidance of danger by enabling the driver to see blind spots and the distance to obstacles when pulling into or out of a garage, approaching T-shaped intersections or passing an oncoming car on a narrow road.

When displaying the view in front of or behind the vehicle, the surroundings can also be seen at a glance with the separate overhead view. At 177 degrees, the front and rear wide-angle views display an extensive area. The front wheels are visible in the side views. After the cameras have been turned on, each type of view can be controlled with the touch screen or command controller.

Active Driving Display*
The new Mazda 6 adopts a new Active Driving Display that replaces the previous combiner-type with one that projects vehicle information on the windshield. Positioning the display above the meters minimises the need for the driver to move their line of vision or adjust focus. The displayed information is divided into upper and lower zones, with driving environment information displayed in the upper section, including turn-by-turn navigation and speed limit information. Vehicle status information, including current vehicle speed and advanced safety equipment information, is displayed in the lower section. The result is quicker and easier reading of pertinent data.

Auto-Hold
Mazda’s Auto-hold function adds extra convenience when driving in urban stop-and-go traffic or in traffic jams by keeping the car stopped even after the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal. The brakes are released once the driver presses the accelerator pedal and the car starts off normally. The function can be turned on or off using a switch mounted on the floor console.

Seat Ventilation*
The new Mazda 6 is the first Mazda to introduce front seat ventilation in its leather upholstery. This system draws air in through ventilation ports in the seat cushions and expels it. Circulating the air inside the cabin in this way draws hot and humid air away from areas where the occupant’s body is in contact with the seat surface, providing a more comfortable driving environment. The ventilation ports cover a wide area of the seatbacks and seat cushions to avoid excessive localised cooling, which can cause discomfort. The system offers three-stage control over ventilation strength.

In general, there are two types of ventilation system. The “pull” system uses suction to draw air away from the seat, while the “push” system blows air out of the seat, much like the way air-conditioning systems work. Mazda opted to use a pull system. The push system blows a strong current of air on specific parts of the occupant’s body. Because the flow of air grows weaker toward the periphery, the system results in uneven cooling. In contrast, the pull system generates a stable flow of air that remains consistent across a wide area of the body. As such, it is able to evenly cool the occupant’s entire body.

Electric Rear Windscreen Sunshade*
The new Mazda 6 offers electric rear windscreen sunshade blocking solar radiation from the rear to further enhance the comfort for the rear passengers. It can be deployed and retracted automatically by the switch operation on the instrument panel. When reverse gear is engaged, the sunshade will retract automatically to ensure rear visibility.

Frameless Rearview Mirror*
The new Mazda 6 offers the stylish frameless rearview mirror with auto-dimming function. When receiving a strong light of more than a certain amount from the headlamp of a rear vehicle, the mirror will automatically suppress the glare to reduce discomfort to the driver.

Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE*

A suite of safety technologies provides world-class safety performance. It is a comprehensive system that employs sophisticated detection devices, and aims to maximise the range of conditions in which the driver can safely operate the vehicle with confidence while minimising the risks that can lead to an accident.

  • Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH): ALH is a driver support system that incorporates the following features to improve visibility when driving at night: auto-controlled Glare-free High Beams, Wide-range Low Beams that illuminate a wider area, and Highway Mode, which automatically directs the headlamps upward when driving at high speeds. Each headlamp’s array of LEDs has been divided more finely into 20 blocks that can be independently lit or turned off as compared to the four blocks of the previous system. The excellent visibility of high beams has also been enhanced to illuminate an area 80 meters ahead. By dividing the array of LEDs more finely, the area in which the headlamps are turned off when detecting an oncoming vehicle has been greatly reduced, making it possible to detect pedestrians quickly. The system also makes use of new controls that allow the light from the high beams to be distributed in three different patterns depending on the car’s speed. The area the driver wants to see is illuminated. The adaptive headlights, which illuminate the area ahead based on the steering angle, have been expanded from two stages to six. This finer, smoother adjustment of the light enhances visibility when cornering for even more precise control of the area that is illuminated.

  • Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS): AFS promotes safer driving by allowing the driver to see further at intersections or around curves at night. Taking input from the steering angle and vehicle speed, AFS predicts the shape of the road and directs the headlamps’ beam in the direction of the travel path, thus illuminating the path which the vehicle will follow.

  • High Beam Control System (HBC): The HBC determines the conditions in front of the vehicle using the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) while driving in darkness to automatically switch the headlights between high and low beams. While driving the vehicle at a speed of about 30km/h or more, the headlights are switched to high beams when there are no vehicles ahead or approaching in the opposite direction.

  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM): This uses 24GHz quasi-milliwave radar sensors to detect vehicles in the blind spots behind and to the side, and using a turn signal while BSM detects a vehicle triggers visual and audio warnings.

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA): RCTA uses the same sensors as BSM to alert the driver when it detects vehicles approaching from either side while the vehicle is reversing. Warnings are given by a flashing indicator in the door mirror and through beeps.

  • Lane-Departure Warning System (LDWS): This senses lane markings on the road surface. When the system predicts departure from the lane, it issues an audible warning that is similar to the noise that a car makes when it runs onto a rumble strip in order to prompt timely steering corrections. The system assesses driver input such as the use of the turn signals to weed out false alarms.

  • Lane-keep Assist System (LAS): A forward sensing camera detects lane markings and assists the steering to keep the driver in lane. The system also alerts the driver when it senses an unintended lane departure by vibrating the steering wheel or through an audible alarm. When the system detects intentional lane change through the use of turn signals, steering assistance is deactivated and no warnings are given. The system operates at speeds above approximately 60km/h.

  • Smart City Brake Support (SCBS R): Ultrasonic sensors that are mounted on the rear bumper enable the SCBS R to detect vehicles and obstacles that are behind the car when it is reversing at a speed of between approximately 2 and 8km/h. If an object is detected, the system automatically applies the brakes to help mitigate collision damage.

  • Advanced Smart City Brake Support (Advanced SCBS): With the high-performance forward sensing camera, Advanced SCBS detects vehicles and pedestrians in front of the vehicle and automatically applies the brakes to help avoid collisions. It also mitigates collision damage while driving between approximately 4 and 80 km/h (sensing a vehicle ahead) or between approximately 10 and 80 km/h (sensing a pedestrian).

  • Dynamic Stability Control & Traction Control System (DSC/TCS): The system electronically controls braking force applied to each wheel to help prevent under or oversteer and maintain vehicle stability when cornering on slippery roads or during sudden steering inputs.

  • Antilock Brake System (ABS): Antilock brakes pulsate brakes to ensure uniform, controllable and consistent braking action.

  • Driver Attention Alert (DAA): DAA uses information such as the steering wheel angle, vehicle speed and output from the forward sensing camera to assess the driver’s condition and help prevent accidents that can be caused by fatigue or lowered alertness. The system monitors and compares current behavior with learned data on how the driver performs when he or she is alert and suggests a rest break when a significant difference is detected.
